That would depend on how you define "greatest".

Basing it on influence, as in how much influence does it exert on the other states/countries, then the answer is....

In America, that title would go to New York City, since it is the only "alpha-global city" in the U.S.

Globally, there could not be one greatest city. You would have to include all the "alpha-global" cities, such as Tokyo, London, etc.

America & World:

NYC - Love the fact that nearly every single people group (not just nation) is represented there. Also it is like taking a short world tour. You step into Little Italy and you're in Europe, Chinatown or Koreatown and you're in Asia. Harlem is great too!
