there should be a tax if the authorities are expected to do something in return for a person owning a pet, i.e. cleaning up its waste, providing facilities like dog parks etc.
Taxes are only exer justified by the provision of services as per the tax in question - like new roads for road tax, free TV service for TV licence, hospitals, social welfare and up-keep of governmental institutions for income tax.
Pets should not be taxed if the government is just trying to claw some extra money from the citizens without giving something in return.

There is a tax on owning a pet - VAT! Every time a person buys a tin of food, a toy or pet accessory, he is paying 17.5% to the tax man.
Environmental Managers (Dustmen) do not clear up after peoples pets - it's not in their contract! Moving a bin isn't even in some contracts.
May be with that logic you should also be taxing children and babies!
During the summer when the holiday makers appear, some foul parents just leave their soiled baby nappies on the beach. While in contrast, most dog owners pick up their dog mess and put it in a bin!
Another reason for not taxing (directly) pet ownership is that it is a multi-million pound industry for the UK and foreign markets. If it wasn't for those involved in the pet industry, there wouldn't be enough revenue raised to pay for your dust men, police men etc.

There are enough restrictions and extra charges for pet owners.. from taxing the pet food to extra hotel and apartment fees... I think if an owner is responsible, cleans up after it, leashes it.. keeps it's health in good check then there should actually be a tax break! Like spay/neuter a cat or dog then get a tax break for that, have no violations on your record in regards to an animal in your care then get a break.. show vet records and get a break...I am not say a huge break but hey, every little bit counts. If you add a special tax on top of everything else pet owners have to pay extra then there will be fewer responsible pet owners out there.

A pet owners responsibility is to clean up after their own pets, even though some do not, there are many that do. Noooooooo there should not be a tax for pets, but they tax everything else, surprised really there isn't one. I live in the country, and i do have to pay taxes already on my horses and chickens. We already have to pay on livestock or exotics.

In many apartment complexes, there is. It's called a pet deposit. Some landlords tack a "pet tax" to the rent, also. My friends used to live in a trailer park, where if you registered your pet(s) like you were supposed to, they'd charge you an extra $5/month on your lot rent. The park that I lived in for 9 years had a "one pet per trailer" policy. I have one cat. Sometimes it's white. Sometimes it's brown. Sometimes it's gray. Sometimes the lighting in the trailer caused it to look like a multiple cat. My cats don't make messes outside my living area. I'd prefer everyone leave their rules and fees off of them!

do you think there should be a tax for breathing?
imagine a daily carbon dioxide you produce, and the required plants to clean the mess you left behind. the government protect or plants new trees or whatever to clean the mess.
it's not logical to tax keeping a pet, but in turkey, there's a tax named informally as trash tax, it is paid in two parts for a year, and it's for your trash and waste water etc. it involve all kinds of mess a person can produce. it's not logical again but maybe it is required. but i think there mustn't be and extra tax to keep pets.

I think people can be fined for not cleaning up after their pets, but they have to be caught. I clean up after my dog because it is only right.
My mother lives in an apartment and has to pay $10 extra rent for the 5lb dog she has in addition to the pet deposit.
The dog doesn't have a job how will she pay rent?
No tax.

no, that's crazy!! for a start people should be cleaning up after their pets anyway. there are fines in place for people who dont and im sure these help towards the dust man's salary. also, we pay enough tax on pet food and vaccinations etc anyway.

Most cities and towns require that your register your pet and buy a yearly tag for your dog or cat. My city requires this. If you don't pick up after you pet you can could get fined $50. My county also requires that you get your pet a yearly rabies shot- you pay for the tag which registers your pet with the county. Most apartments require a pet deposit. My apartment charges $400 dog or $300 cat deposit. Believe me- you pay for having a pet.

I don't think tax should be imposed for having a pet. It's irresponsible people who should be penalised for not clearing up, after the animal [dogs / cats] have gone about their usual business.
