From the PC that you want to connect to, go to the website http://www.whatismyip.org. This will show you the Internet IP address for your network segment. Then on the PC, get the local area network IP address. I'm not sure how to do this on a Linux box - on a Windows box you'd go to a command prompt and run ipconfig.

Once you have these two addresses you'll need to access the router and do port forwarding to the PCs network IP address. The ports that you forward depend on what remote control you are using. The RDP protocol, which is used for Terminal Servives and Windows remote desktop, is port 3389 and VNC or Vitrual Network Connection is typically port 5500. You need to point the appropriate port to the local area network address of the PC.

The next step is installing server side software to allow remote connections to the PC. VNC is downloadable, free, and pretty easy to use. Install the server piece on the PC that you are connecting to and start it.

Finally, install the client piece of the same software on the PC you are connecting from. When you try to establish the connection, you'll need to connect to the Internet IP address, the one you got from whatismyip.

find out your current IP. Its probably a 192.168.something.something.
That is your router's IP. LOGIN to your router at your gateway IP.

in windows, get to a DOS box.. 'cmd' or 'command' and do an 'ipconfig'. Find your default gateway. Then take THOSE numbers, and goto them in your internet browser. (internet explorer, etc)
http://192.168.1.254
Find out your login info for your router. It should be easily found in the router manual or on the router's manufacturer homepage. Usually its just a combination of 'admin' 'password' and blank. (no letters, no numbers) Login, and thru that interface, goto status, info, or whatever... and you'll find your REAL IP address. Be advised its probably a dynamic IP and itll change after a certain time. They're designed to do that.
