Whomever told you that was wrong. The Ancient Olympics didn't practive usually cruel sporting events with perhaps one exception called "Pankration" That would compare to UFC today, so who's being cruel?

Yes you are right! Rather they used to be as deadly and fatal as the players loose their lives during the game.
