We do not necessarily cry for ourselves, self pity is feeling sorry for yourself. There are many emotions and tears comes with trauma, heartbreak which is a trauma and a sadness felt for others, as well as for ourselves. Self pity is a sorry feeling for yourself, when you cry for another because of being sorry for them it is not self pity
Emotions, the interactions of the soul combining them all within the heart, others can provoke the heart and stir emotions

We cry for/with the feelings of others.
We cry for feeling physical pain - which isn't selfish - it hurts!
There is selfishness and self pity -
Selfishness is what EVERYONE is - If we don't take care of our self's first than we have nothing to give!
But self-pity is not doing something about whatever it is we feel we should be felt sorry for, a reason to whine, a reason to not progress - Self pity is unproductive!

Try to understand the situation rather than force yourself to have no pity.
