Yes, really... they don't have handles... lol
And in the US movies somebody always drops them or turns them over so all the content rolls all around... lol

In Europe i haven't seen carrier bags without handles.
They haven't invented yet the handles for those bags in the US.

Comments about Rugby...'s answer
It seems that the movie directors haven't been in their life in a real supermarket, if they put actors to use carrier bags without handles in films. And not even the actors, if they are not complaining about it...

Only a guess, but i can think of two reasons.

1.) To save money. (Although we do have what are called "shopping bags," not "grocery bags," which is what we call the others. These have string handles, and are available free only at upper-end stores, but no grocery stores that I know of.)

2.) To encourage the use of plastic bags (which DO have handles), which are thought to have far less environmental impact (and also save money.)

Some higher-end grocery stores do offer paper bags with paper handles.

because not everything you see in the movies is true or reflects EVERY supermarket in the us. i worked at a market for a year and a half and we had paper bags WITH HANDLES as well as plastic bags WITH HANDLES. when are people going to learn that movies are not real?

For the same reason we in europe have different election protocols.

We think about it a little bit longer before we do something stupid.
