every mother will want things that she needs for the baby. not the frills that most people think of.
blankets are a must, specially recieving blankets. diapers and wipes. buy a size bigger for later. i have all kinds of new born that i didn't use because my baby out grew them really fast. ask her if she is bottle feeding and if so what kind of formula? a can of formula would also be helpful with some bottles. clothes 0-3 months 3-6 months are always good. a baby is growing out of things at a fast rate. think about things that can last awhile and not just the first couple of weeks. i do appreciate everything that i got during the babies first couple of days. after that i was on my own and had to buy new clothes and formula and bigger diapers after the first month of having her.
so that is my suggestion.
good luck and think ahead. mom will really apprectiate it.

From experience, I can tell you that useful is best. I have two boys, and the gifts I truly appreciated and enjoyed were the more useful ones...onesies, receiving blankets, diapers, etc. Stay away from frilly little dresses, rattles, stuff like that. Honestly, your friend will be so busy with her newborn that putting a pink lacy dress on her will be the least of her concerns! If she's born in the summer, buy her comfortable, soft, easy to put on clothing. If she's born in the fall/winter, buy her longsleeve onesies, receiving blankets, warm hats, etc. Cute is definitely cute, but useful will be much more appreciated!
Another thing to think of...get her some baby detergent. My sister gave me a bottle of Dreft at my baby shower. I can't believe I forgot something like that! I would have been stuck when it came time to wash the baby's clothes before I set up the nursery and put them away. Also, think about a baby "grooming" kit. Something basic with a little comb, brush, nail clippers (for later. You shouldn't clip newborns' nails...you should file them. They're still attached to their skin when they're born, and you could give them a nasty nick if you're not careful), a thermometer, a medicine dispenser, etc.)

Get her some cute outfits in bigger sizes, like 6-9 months. Many people just buy newborn clothes for babies, but then the mother doesn't have any clothes for when the baby is bigger. So, it is a very thoughtful and convenient gift.

Diaper Genies, I think that is how you spell them, are great gifts. The disposable diapers are put in and there is no orders from nasty diapers. Lots and lots of diapers. I usually buy diapers for toddlers because so many diapers are given for newborns. Gifts that will be used in six months or more are great. Remember, most gifts are only for newborns. When the baby grows, there may be needs for things that were not taken care of with the shower. Kiss baby for me.

Clothes are always welcome. But don't buy the smallest, they probably have enough of those. A bit bigger lasts longer and it will fit soon enough... too soon even.
Other one is something I have seen at a babyshower. It was a HUGE cake made of rolled up disposable diapers. Nice ribbons to tie them together. Looked great and came in handy anyway.

A floor mat with colorful attachements is relatively cheap and is a VERY useful thing to have in the house. You could give her gif vouchers to a baby store, or even a gist voucher for herself. i loved to get gifts for myself in addition to those for the baby....

best gift for anyone is at least 1 case of diapers & a case of wipes. those are very expensive & will definately be appreciated & used!
Also, one of the best gifts is the gift of your time. During the first 2 months, things can get overwhelming. Offer to come over at least 1x a day for at least 1 hr. to take over for the mommy so she can sleep, eat, take a shower, run to the store, talk on the phone--whatever. that is also one of the best gifts & will be greatly appreciated!
