yoga is supposed to be meditation through the awareness of the body. ok don't overload it with meaning. it is a very effective set of methods to build strength and flexibility. it incorporates breathing and relaxation techniques. some people claim that it helps to strengthen the mind. I don't think you could call it a cult seeing that it is taught in ywca and various cultural and community centers. probably best to think of it as healthy stretch exercises on floor mats, wearing black leotards. many dancers practice yoga for flexibility and strength. as for changing your life or no more negativity that is a bit much to ask of anything. You might also want to check out Tai-Chi which is a sort of real slow martial art style that concentrates on flexibility and strength also but uses karate forms and movement patterns but very slow and graceful. Many dancers also use this form of exercise. It builds strength very well and if you speed it up a little bit it becomes a very effective defense technique. Both of these practices are low impact so that the risk of damage to your joints and muscles is very low. most of the women that I have known who practiced yoga were very attractive and fit, the ones that practiced tai-chi were not as many but also very fit and attractive and also could take care of themselves quite well if there was trouble. Physical activity, involvement with people, and being able to accomplish something are always good, and will of course go a long way towards dispelling "negativity". But that is mostly just a really neat side effect of the practice. Best thing is both yoga and tai-chi are almost always offered at very low cost or in many places for free.
Look up Hatha Yoga and look up Daoist Tai Chi

Yoga definately makes you focus, relax and have good health. But it's a continous process. Yoga is not meant to be quick fix solution to shape your body and mind. People gets benifits of Yoga over longer period of time. But needs lot of passion.
It has recently become culte, but would strongly advocate restraining from joining only to prove a point or show-off.
It is a very serious stream and needs lot of commitment. Yoga has truely provided a great results over long run. You actually come very close to the natural spirits / positive enegrgy in the body.
This days every othey gym-fric wants to be Yoga teacher and make quick bucks. Do some dilligence before joining.

It should be a relaxer, however it gets turned into a solitary diurnal ritual.
Let me draw an analogy, when I idly surf the net on company time I like to call it essential stochastic blue-sky research, my boss calls it wasting time, we are both agreed it is relaxing, but he would prefer it if I did it on my own time.
