for the best value/performance ratio, i suggest you try checking out aldi or lidl... i know it sounds crazy, but they actually use good quality components from well-known manufacturers such as pioneer and samsung... you don't end up spending money on a brand name.
i got my laptop from lidl about 18 months ago and it was as good a spec as anything out there - and it's still up there, no problems whatsoever.
it also has a three year guarantee, which dell will charge several hundred quid for...
otherwise, toshiba machines are generally regarded as being very reliable.
of course, if you're not doing a lot of gaming, pretty much any laptop will do the trick nowadays. i would advise against a laptop with shared graphics memory however...
try and get one that has its own dedicated graphics card and video memory...

I am a Sytem Administrator for a rather large retail company. We use many dells and IBM laptops in our stores and corporate office. I can tell you for a fact that you will be dissapointed in a dell laptop. If you must purchase a dell, just make sure that you dont get a celeron processor, they are very slow and cheaply made. I would recommend that you go with a HP, and depending on how much you want to spend, you can most likely get a much better deal through them. I would also tell you to go for the mid range pc just b/c it is going to last longer.

I've spent the last couple of week looking at laptops to buy. I think I'm going to get a dell as they offer the best all round package. They also have good weekly deals like free double memory.

dell are probably the best value on laptops at moment, make sure you look in the press before going on their web site as they have special e-codes that the sales pereson seems to forget when ordering over the web or phone!

Gateway is the best I can find. Don't try Sony or Panasonic. They're usually more expensive because they are very common and very popular among businesspeople and students.
