There are two specific reasons for this. First, we have a need to attract men. Men are generally more visually oriented than women. An attractive physique not only serves as an initial attraction but, also seems to make one's personality and behavior more attractive to men.
The second reason is that men generally feel the need to compete with other men. This includes competitions in strength and physical attractiveness. Though these competitions are usually unspoken, most men agree that they exist. Competition is a common trait in straight men too and is a natural male characteristic used to attract a mate.

That is NOT a standard that is followed by the so-called gay men. I have known some friends(gay guys) that (in all probability) wanted to keep trim and fit but most of the individuals that I knew to be gay or suspected of being gay were pigs.. SO.. NO.. what you are saying about ALL gay men..or just GAY MEN ARE obsessed, etc. is NOT true.

Perhaps if you stop worrying about what other people think about how you look you will feel more comfortable in your own skin. The gay media offers unrealistic ideals for gay men and how they are supposed to look. Just be yourself and take care of yourself, but you don't have to go overboard. The most important thing is to eat good food and eat your veggies ;) Drink water and stay away from sodas and sugary drinks.

Gay men are youth-obsessed, equate attractiveness with youth.
Think about it. Do you see anyone over 40 in a gay porno?
Because our community is so concentrated, such a small group, the competition for sex is fierce. So alot of us obsessively work out as a way to get laid.
But, then again, that doesn't explain Bears, does it?

On the surface I would agree with you. When I would go clubbing at gay clubs, I would see more men with perfectly toned bodies than at straight clubs. But that is at the clubs. Living in San Francisco, every day interactions with a broad spectrum of homosexual men makes this not appear to be the case. Just like with women, when gay men get comfortable in a relationship they appear to let it go a little. Perhaps this applies to single gay men, like singles of all sexual orientations.

It's not just gay guys but it is a great big percentage of gays.
I think in this day and age we all need to keep in shape and eat healthier.
Look how many people in the world are overweight and out of shape and dying of diabetes, heart failure and so on.
