OK, maybe we have a *similar* culture but it is NOT the same. There are so many totally unique things about our country and our Australian-ness that you just couldn't merge us in as another state. Apart from the constitutional mess, do you really want their health system? Even though Medicare is a bit or a shamozzle, at least we have it here. You don't get charged hundreds of dollars for showing up at the emergency ward and you get your drugs subsidised. Our minimum wage is higher.

As for us "going along with everything", that is part of being allies, although I think we should have made a stand about David Hicks and his treatement at that hell hole prison. It is one thing to stand up against terror, but it doesn't give you the right to take away anyone's human rights without a trial. I think it is very positive that John Howard has forged some good links with Bush, but I do worry that we do follow a little too blindly sometimes. I love the USA and would love to visit, but I don't want to be a citizen. I'm sure that many over there would say the same about Australia but not want to be one of our citizens. They probably look at some of the things we do and the way we run our country and shudder just as much as we do when we look at their country's politics.

lol. We had a debate like this earlier this semester for Law Week.

Arguments FOR:
- Similar system (i.e. Federal Parliament, Judicial System, etc)
- Similar policies
- Close ties/friends/allies
- Economical benifits (free trade, less red tape, etc.)
- Political expidency (connection between commonwealth states and other)

Arguments AGAINST:
- Will not work
- Australians and Americans fundamentally different (values, culture, political goals, personal goals, etc)
- Mere distance between countries
- Recent political situations suggest distancing of the two countries
- Why should two country join as one when a) they are both going so well, and b) when one is obviously going to take advantage of the other?

We had a lot more arguments, but I cannot remember atm.

The U.S. should really become the eighth state of Australia.
Think about it something like hurricane Katerina comes along, within days a response team is on the ground fixing things and making the victims safe.
Universal health care.
Fair work places fair rates of pay.
No underclasses.
Elections that aren't rigged.
Better eduction.
etc,etc,etc,etc.

Why would Australia want to be a state when they are not only their own country, but continent? How feasible would it be to support people so far away? There would be more complications in the judicial system to have them join the United States than there would be leaving them be. They are successful as a nation now... let them be.

What for?
Why should an independent country/nation want to be a "slave" of another nation?

If Australia become a state of US, then Australia must obey all US rules.
It is good to have own freedom.

I am from Indonesia.

No. Try using Puerto Rico instead of Australia and this question will make some sense.
