The holy grail is a made up idea by the Catholic church. Christ spoke of a well that gave eternal life and that those who drank of it would never thirst again. He was refering to himself as the well of water that gave people eternal life. Christ is the grail. Most people would try to get you to believe it was some magical cup with life giving powers but they were sadly mistaken. The cup, grail, fountain of youth, water of life, all of the above were, are, and forever will be Jesus Christ

The Catholic Church most certainly did not "make up" the story of the Holy Grail--it was considered borderline heretical for many many years.
The first stories of the Holy Grail were written by troubadours in the Middle Ages, although there has been a good argument made that the original Grail was the Cauldron of Bran, a mythical Celtic cauldron that possessed many of the miraculous qualities of the Grail.
In the earliest stories, the Grail was either a plate or a stone. it wasn't until much, much later that it became a cup--and only after the Catholic Church realized that they couldn't suppress the story, so they decided to hijack it instead. It was then that the whole "cup of Christ" facade was attached to the legend

The "Holy Grail" was the cup Jesus used at the last supper, when he rose, and said in reference to the wine, "Take this all of you and drink from it, this is my blood which is poured out for many ...". Its a relic that was lost ages ago, but found by King Arthur or one of his knights, however the French also claimed to have a grail and chased King Arthur's army from the castle by catapulting cows over the walls onto his troops. You should rent a movie called Monty Python's Holy Grail for more info.
