i really like "Happy" by Clinique. Also anything that smells like roses, vanilla, or the best: Jasmine flowers.
Go to a department store and ask to sample fragrances.

The perfume you buy doesn't have to be the latest there are some nice fragrances that have been released a long tome ago such as :Arden Beauty by Elizabeth Arden,Yellow Jeans by Versace,Calvin Klein Eternity,Escada Sexy Grafitti(any Escada scent,in myopinon is great!) Dolce&Gabbana Light Blue,Vera Wang The fragrance by Vera Wang,Lolita Lempicka -Lolita Lempicka or Michael Kors by Michael Kors(now this perfume is out of this world, I think this might be the best gift)
But you could/should go to a store like sephora and check out their perfumes that they offer and see which one you would like your wife to have to wear,basically see by scent which you would like to have your wife wear,it doesn't have tobe the latest

Just picking the latest thing is the wrong way to go about it. Go to the Dept. Store and browse the perfume counter and smell the scent that you like the smell of.Otherwise, you may end up with a 50.00 bottle of something that you hate and that she may not like either, but will wear to please you for months.
Personally, I like Calvin Klein scents- like Escape.
Also Tommy Girl is nice.
