if a person makes assumptions that have no basis in fact or reality, then it does make one not only look like an @$$, i think it makes them an @$$ as well.

Assumption is an inherent part of human beings. We assume everyday; we have to, or we wouldn't be able to function properly. Assumptions should be made within reason, but you can't tell someone not to assume something, since it's usually based in past experience and it's what they've learned. It helps to be constructive and work through it, rather than chastize.
