This depends on your motherboard. Most mainboards targetted at the enthusiast and overclocking crowd support mixed speeds/sizes.

If you have a motherboard that supports dual channel DDR, you will have to use a matched pair. Mixing might work but likely you will get really weird results. Dual channel DDR systems typically have four dimm slots, one set blue and the other black. You have to populate either both black or both blue (or all) memory modules for dual channel DDR to work. Each of the colors represents one 'bank' of memory. When all the slots are populated some boards support memory interleaving which increases performance.

You typically can have different size ram in two different banks. So one bank could be filled with two 256MB PC4200 and the other two with 1GB PC4200 (this is the exact configuration I have in my computer) or any other combination, as long as the speeds and sizes match in the same bank.

Even if your motherboard supports mixing ram types, you really should try to get the same speed ram, or faster ram than you already have. Ram rated at 4200 will have no problem running at 2700. That will happen if you stick a 2700 dimm in, because all the ram has to run at the speed of the slowest module.

yes, according to these sites below you can mix RAMs with different speeds but it will operate at the speed of the lowest chip so u don't lose it, and about sizes it seems ok too...
personal opinion... I don't recommend either and I don't know anyone who does either

I would look closely at your motherboards specs , website & forums if available. Some "mobo"s allow only matching ram, however, most are more lenient. Self built pc? go to newegg.com ... Store bought pc like a dell or something, call them since you payed for thier help.

Good luck and have fun with this fairly simple upgrade. If opening your pc intimidates you, places like bestbuy install ram purchased there for free.

No
you can mix sizes ie a piece of 512Mb and a piece of 256Mb but they must be the same type ie DDR400..you cant for example mix DDR400 and DDR2 67 or SDRAM

Definitely a NO, NO!! If you mix them up, it can mess up your computer. In addition, you should be careful when insert the memory stick in your computer. You have to make sure they're snugged in before you turn on the computer. I burned my motherboard and memory stick because of the memory stick wasn't properly installed.
