there are 53 players on a team, not 42 or 65 like those first two idiots answered. and there are several different fouls. the officials throw yellow penalty flags when a foul is committed. the rules are far too involved and complicated to go into here, but the sport is so strategic it's like a hard hitting chess match. if you watch some games and start learning the rules, i'm sure you'll find it fascinating. thank you for showing such an interest, it's very refreshing to hear a european asking about the rules instead of just bashing a sport they don't understand.

There are 65 players on a roster there is only allowed 11 players on the field per team the three teams are offense for scoring defense for stopping and special teams for kicking or returning kicks/blocking.
There are penalties which are like fouls they cause the offense to lose yard if it is on them and if its on the defense the offense moves up some yards usually 5-15 yard
Scoring is 6 pts. for a touchdown which is when the opponent crosses your goal line 1 pt for a pat which is kicked threw the goal post after a touchdown 2 pts for a 2pt conversion which is used when a team is down by 11 with less then 5 mins. to go after scoring a touchdown or 3 pts. for a field goal which is when your team cant score a TD but can kick the ball through the goal post. And 2 pts for a safety which is when the defense tackles the opposing team with the ball in there own end zone.

1)there are 53 players on the active roster.
2)football can mean several different things depending on the country, dont forget were american(we have to be different)
3)you get 6 points for every touchdown, 1 pt for an extra point, conversion is worth 2 points, and a field goal is worth 3 points, a safety is worth 2 points.
4) you basically can get a foul for being offsides, time delay, or any type of cheap shot, there are hundreds more.
