There is a small, coin shaped battery inside the CPU, it keeps the clock and other settings programmed and updated. This battery normally last around 6-10 years.

the pc doesn't update when it's off, it is programmed to syncronize with the US gov or with a MS Windows clock every 7days via internet. It also has a small battery incase it doesn't connect to the internet this will continue the time but would require after sometime to be adjusted.

Even when you shut down your computer, it never actually stops running. There's an internal battery that it uses to keep the clock running.

note: it does synchronize every so often, but that does not mean it *stops running* when the computer is off.
