It might be considered odd these days, particularly if you are genuine, but there's nothing wrong with it at all! People should remember to say please and thank you, and maybe even smile.
It might be odd if you said it to a vending machine though...

The person who said that the VENDOR is supposed to say thank you is both partially correct and a complete asshat. It's polite for BOTH the customer AND the vendor to say thank you, but common decency died a LONG time ago in this country. The only time people are polite to others now is when they want something, and rarely even then. I stopped expecting the ammount of politeness that I show to others quite a long time ago because it's just not fruitful most of the time.

Always say thank you to everyone. If you want to sound less formal say thanks or thanks a lot. It takes less than 2 seconds to be polite, but it may make a lasting impression. That vendor or salesman could end up being your boss someday. How would you like it if he asked if it was odd to say thanks to you or someone else beneath him on the corporate ladder? Thank people regardless of their station in life. What could be wrong with making someone feel appreciated?
