Immediately after the bruise is incurred (up to 24 hrs.): Apply cold. This minimizes leakage of blood into the surrounding tissues.

After 24 hrs.: Apply heat. This speeds the inflammatory processes that break down the blood that has leaked into the surrounding tissues.

use ice for the swelling. Try Arnica gel (but please be careful not to get it into the eye) which can help draw bruises out - available from most health food stores or pharmacies.

Use the ice for about 10 minutes at a time, and use for the next 3-4 days. If the pain has subsided, then you can switch to heat. Using heat too soon will make the bruise worse!

Good luck!

When I've a bruise I take an iron supplement. The bruise seems to vanish much quicker then if I ignore it and let it heal on its own.
A Vitamin K cream will also help speed the healing.
Try it and perhaps it will help with your friend's eye.
