The most important thing to me is that house is on a well used and regular bus route as I have no car. I look for the commute details - ie, how long the journey is, how much it costs and how often buses are (If I am staying at the same job). I look at other properties in the neighbourhood to see if they are well cared for, tidy gardens etc. I go to the neighbourhood at different times of day to see what the level of kids hanging around is. I make sure new house is not too near busy road or railway as peace and quiet is important to me.

Apart from walking distance to train station ( with good connections) and local amenities, important features are things like off-street parking, south facing garden space, ample electric, telephone and internet sockets, the ability to install digital tv connections, the age and condition of things like central heating and double glazing, the potential to extend, watch out for flight paths if near to airports, and parking restrictions if near to train station, and type of clientel if near to pubs. These are all things that would affect your day to day life, but may not be taken into consideration when viewing a property. I always used to advise driving around the area on different days of the week, in daylight and at night to get a feel for the area.

Work potential and schools would be a definite. Also, local laws, taxes, and zoning. Would you be able to make any changes if you so desired, or would certain laws limit you. Will the surrounding properties be subject to any changes. You may also check into sex offenders in the neighborhood, and general criminal activity. Also look at neighboring properties , are they well kept, or will they decrease the value of your land. Is there a homeowners association and if so what are its regulations. Also, have the water tested.
