Anil Ambani owned Reliance Energy decided to invest Rs. 60,000 crores (approx 13.5 billion USD) in various power generation projects which include hydro, gas-fired and thermal power plants totalling 16,000 mw and a 2,000 mw nuclear power plant.

As to why all this was announced, probably because it is good for the company's bottomline in the long run and it will enhance India's dissmal infrastructure.
