I just got assulted by a guy who I know little bit. He came saying he wanted to talk, but he hit me twice on the face. I did call police but did not want him arrested or anything because he was friend of friend of mine.
I do not want to do anything legally, but I want to make sure I get my medical bills covered, because I have a broken tooth. Can I sue this person when I told police that I did not want to press charge on him?

Thanks for the quick answers. The only witness is the friend of the guy, so I'm not sure if he will be one. Aside from broken tooth and cut on my lips, I'm ok. I did not do anything to him at all. The only reason that I sent away the police is my friend begged not to do anything saying he will pay for the bills, although I don't know if I can still be friends with him.

Yes.
First I would talk to this person, who you say is your friend. It sounds as if you don't want to get into the whole legal mumbo jumbo or else you would have already had them arrested to begin with.
Go to your dentist and have your insurance cover whatever damage to your mouth that was inflicted & simply present the bills, if any to your assaulter.
If you don't get anywhere then, you can file a small claim lawsuit to recover any out of pocket damages that your insurance company won't cover in addition to any punitive damages of the assault & pain and suffering ( to teach this person never to do this again)
Also, as proof of what transpired the evening you were assaulted,
even though you didn't press charges...some sort of report should've been made out by the police who arrived at the scene. Go to your local police station & recover this report & take this to court with you if all else fails
A prime example of a case that was NOT pursued criminally but was to recover funds was the Kobe Bryant case. The SUPPOSED victim in the case did not pursue any criminal charges but went through with civil preceedings to recover money.
*Kudos to you, becasue you are far better than me...I woulda took a damn bat to their grill (mouth) if I got hit, BUT everyone reacts different to different situations I suppose.

You can sue him. It might be much harder to win if you don't press criminal charges. Call an attorney. Make sure you made a police report and make a list of any witnesses. If he comes around and apologizes, ask him to sign a promissory note, or letter of agreement that he will pay your medical bills in lieu of you pressing charges.

Yes. The lack of action on the criminal case does not foreclose a civil action. You might be asked why you didn't want to "press charges", with some insinuation that the reason was that you might have been at fault in some manner.

Yes, If he won't pay your medical bills without going to court, you can sue him for the money in civil court. He should feel lucky with that rather than an assault charge.

im pretty sure you can....i would contact your lawyer (or find one if you don't already have one), and then you'll have a much better chance of getting what you want done.....but seriously, you are a really nice person...if it had been me, i would absolutely have pressed charges!
