Often with these types of jobs we are looking for folks with at least some limited technical experience but a background in programming is definitely unnecessary. What is important is that you can demonstrate that you are capable of writing clear and easy to understand reports so that the programmers working on the project can easily pinpoint bugs and possible areas for improvement.

no. i like end users to test my software. the more ignorant the better. software programmers take things for granted. ignorant users do things a programmer wouldn't necessarily expect, but could cause undesireable results, which the programmer then can remedy so that users don't cause /that/ problem any more.
