Though I have no scientific facts to present, my guess is that the sodium and chlorine molecules in the salt lower the freezing point of water thus causing the temp to be that much colder before the water stays frozen as ice.

Conversely, how about when you add salt to a pot of water to help it boil faster. The salt lowers the water's boiling point thus causing the water to boil sooner, at a lower temp.

because the salt gets inbetween the water molecule and disturbes the cristaline formation when cooled>> end in the decrease the freesing point to (-0c) and thats why the sea water in the poles never freese but the rain and snow falls on top and forms the ice cap. Nice QUESTION

This is a gud ques... keepin ur earllier ques. in mind....
newys... i jst studied it... its a process of OSMOSIS. the salt alters the osmotic potential of the snow n thus, lowers the freezing pt..... hence, keeps ice to liquids... ur ques. is incorrect... actuallt sprinklin salt converts ice to water... widely used in cold countries
