You need an HVAC license to put freon in anything. They won't sell it to you without the license.

Number 1) Freon is a trade name, trademarked by DuPont. The stuff is refrigerant, not freon.
2.) I have been in this trade for 30 years. I need to be licenced to service equipement, and be in possesion of a recovery unit. I can be reported and fined a lot of money if I do not follow proper procedure, or get caught venting refrigerant into the atmosphere.
3.) I had to be taught, trained, and gather experiance over the years to be up on current technology of the trade. Along with that, I have to know the safe way to do things, because if it is not done the right way, I could be severly injured or killed.
4.) I have to be registered at local wholesalers so I can purchase cans of various refrigerants. If I am not, I have to present my certification card to them.
Get the right person to do it for you. It may cost a little, but it will be better and safer this way.

It needs license and quite expensive equipment to charge freon into system. A vacuum pump, in the first place, nitrogen pressurising to check for leaks and leak detectors, gauges, etc. Forget it, unless you have done course in airconditioning.

If the A/C is like automobile A/C units; they aren't even using freon anymore. Talk to a heating and cooling specialist to have it repaired.
