It's hard to think that maybe your parents are wrong. But sometimes they are, this is part of growing up. First, you should make your own judgements. Do you know many Mexicans? If not, then you would have no basis for believing this. If you do, perhaps the Mexicans you know do not speak English well. That would be because they are from a foreign country, and English is an exceptionally hard language to learn. That is not 'dumb', that just means their experiences are different from yours.

It is good that you see that this blanket generalization, or prejudice, on the part of your Mom may be wrong. All people are really the same in their brains, no one race or group is any smarter than any other. Their cultures are different, and many people find cultures other than their own to be weird or dumb, but they are just different. Try to learn about the cultures of others and you will see that underneath all of the frills and differences, you are just the same as them.

Well they cant be that dumb they have changed the American language to SPANISH! We are now the minority and Spanish it the majority, someone must be a little smarter then we are cause they are here, and now we have to learn their language instead of them learning ours! Perhaps your mom is just tired like the rest of us with the whole we are immigrants thing....
They have there own country .....if they want ours..speak ENGLISH!!!!!! or go home............nothing like coming to the USA where them and their 5 kids get a minimum wage job, and then feed off the goverment that I pay into for taxes and they don't have to cause they are going back as soon as picking season is over, they get medical, dental and vision for free and the friggen american citizen can't get it! I don't think it is prejidisum just BULLSH!T! Why do you think they are all coming here? Not for education! FREE RIDE BABY!, they get a better education than we do, cause the state pays! We work 40 hours a week both parents and our kids don't get near what they get.... Take it from someone in Yakima...now known as Little Mexico, when you go to the local Target there are more of them then white people, and you can understand anything they are saying.....where is the county heading???? short story:
My mother only had a 3 grade education when she came here (legally) to Mexico, she joined job core, and got accepted to a top private university and graduated 5th in her class, and is now a bilingual teacher (35 yrs) and making good money. My father was valedictorian of his high school and works and is a director for my city's arts and cultural department. We live very well off, They are both truly SMART, because they went from nothing to something.

On what basis does your mother make this assumption? The statement that Mexicans are dumb stem from racism, prejudice, ignorance and fear. A narrow minded person who refuses to look beyond their limited view will always live in ignorance.

Shame on your mom for saying that, especially in front of you. You seem to be wiser and more mature than she is. You know it's wrong. I hope she does too. Perhaps you could ask her why she thinks that way. Does she resent the fact that many Mexicans are in the US illegally? Does she think they are taking the bread out of the mouths of US citizens? Since you feel it's wrong to think this way, can you tell her how you feel? This is a great opportunity to share your feelings and views with her. Perhaps she'll change her mind. That is a very interesting thing to say. It is usually wrong to generalize about anything. I'm sure there are some very intelligent Mexicans. Maybe the reason there are so many illegal Mexicans trying to get in this country is because they can't cut it in their own country. Maybe the Mexicans who are not trying to enter our country illegally are the smart ones. THEY know the difference between legal and illegal.

There were many incredible artists and visionaries from Mexico. Freida Kahlo, Carloz Chavez, even Vincente Fox is smart. The problem with Mexico is the government does not take care of its people, so the rich get good educations and the poor get sub-par educations. When you have a bad education, even the brightest of minds can appear dull. Just because someone is Mexican, it does not make them stupid.

One reason so many Mexicans are in the US is to gice their cildren a better education than they have had-and many of those children are SMART! it just goes to show you what happens to kids who are given a chance to develope their skills.

Funny, my hubby is 1/2 Hispanic and he got a college degree. My brother got married to an Mexican girl and she's got a college degree. I also like their family closeness. Now if you mean they can act a bit silly, I have to admit that, but if you take it as it is meant it should be no problem. Try to get to know some and have some fun with them you might change your mind a bit. I really think they're less stuck up.

Well the truth of the matter is that some Mexicans are dumb as well as whites, blacks, asians pretty much every race has dumb people. So to say that all are dumb is completely untrue I am sure there are Mexicans that work for NASA, that are doctors, engineers, etc. There are also those who may just be dumb and not undereducated, and of course there are those that are undereducated who if given the education would probably excel, and then there are those who have average intelligence....but to say all are dumb that in itself is dumb.....so I guess you and your mom are pretty dumb.

No because not all Mexicans are dumb sometimes they act dumb but then again who doesn't and not just talking about any specific race...your mom can not just label all Mexicans as dumb it is unfair to the other Mexicans who are not and want to make a difference on how there race is viewed and labeled.
