Alaska is the biggest state in the USA. many people commonly guess Texas.
This is because due to the distortion of the latitude and longitudinal lines used in mapping the globe. The images near the top and bottom of the globe become compressed making alaska appear smaller on a flat map, while on a round globe it looks the correct, larger size.
