Remember that one is not better than the other. You cannot have givers without takers. Think deeply about yourself and make an honest appraisal of your true nature. Try this test: Have you ever argued over paying a bill? If yes, you may be a giver. If you are not the type to argue over paying the bill...you may be a taker.

Please decide which one you are. You can't choose both. It's like saying you are an introvert AND an extrovert. Tell me why you answer one way or the other.

I am a taker. I will argue over paying a bill. But i eat the food others cook, or enjoy things that others do for me. I try to even it out but I know my true nature is being a taker.

I would say a giver. I am an artist and a musician. I have taught a great many people my art with no expectations of return so they could use their new found skill to make some money to make their lives better. I also have my band play benefits any time we are able to so we may help others.

I do however disagree that one can not be both a giver and a taker. One can as helping others does help yourself in many different ways. Put aside material or monetary returns and look at emotional gratification and satisfaction. If you give you will receive these in return. Some people are givers just so they can enjoy the return (or take) of emotional satisfaction.

For example when I teach some one my art I do so for the satisfaction of doing so. When a person thanks you , in turn you are taking their gratitude and appreciation to satisfy an emotional need.

All of my personality testing I've done puts me in a category that has "giver" in there somewhere. I've observed that the big time takers like to hang around me since I am so giving. I've learned not to do that but I get stuck with the tab quite often with a certain group of friends.

I feel like I need to be careful about the kind of person I match up with. At its worst, givers become enablers to awful people who have terrible life problems. The giver just covers for them.

I'm not sure about the example of the test you gave. I thought a giver was one who give's, a taker one who takes. If that' true then I'm a giver mostly, with bits of a taker depending on the circumstance. Example- if it's for a great job I'm going to take advantage of that opportunity.

I am not being difficult-- I honest to god don't think you can be one or the other!! We all must be both, whether we know it or not. We MUST take to survive--from resources, affection and support from others, even if minimal, and I would argue that the most generous and easy "givers" are also those that recieve easily. You can see this very easily with , say, compliments. I don't think the world is divided in half like that. I think high "giving" correlates to high "recieving", and vice versa, and the opposite is also true. And if you think that self-consciusly "giving" all the time, and deliberately refusing to "take" is an exception to this, think again. When you do this, you "take" away others opportunity to feel needed and useful in your life, and you "give" them a feeling of indebtedness, or slight inferiority. It can be a form of passive aggression.Sorry--that's really what I think.
