It's important to pull them from the root... that way they won't grow back! This is usually pretty difficult to do, so it's best to use weed killing spray if you want them gone for good. Most people break them as close to the ground as they can becase it's the easiest... but they have to weed often :-\.

It depends on whether you enjoy picking weeds every week or two or if this is torture. If this is your forte...cut them at the ground level and they'll grow back quicker. Otherwise, your best bet to control the weed growth is to pull the roots out as well. However, sometimes this may be difficult by just grabbing the weed stem, so it's a good idea to dig a couple inches around the stem just to make sure you pull out the entire root. Happy Weed Pick'n-

IF you don't pull the root out they'll just grow right back, breaking them off close to the ground won't help anything they'll just come right up, pull from the root or spray some weed killer on them

If you want to get rid of the weeds you need to pull them in a way that gets as much of the roots as you can. If you water before pulling the weed it sometimes helps to pull up more of the root. The best way to get rid of weeds is to prevent them before they get a chance to establish themselves or to apply weed killer after the weeds have emerged. If you have weeds on your lawn then you should treat the lawn with a good quality post-emergent weed killer that is recommended for your specific type of turf-grass. Using a pre-emergent weed killer at the correct time will help to control or might even eliminate weeds for the next season. If your fighting weeds in your planting beds then you might consider laying down a good quality weed-block fabric and cover it with mulch. This has two benefits; the fabric will help to prevent weed growth and the mulch will help retain moisture in your planting beds so less watering will be required less often. Good luck.

I moisten the ground around the weeds a bit and then on my hands and knees I use a small hand shovel and go in for the root.

It is easier to pull the weeds by the root. This is a better chance of the weeds not to comme back or spred.

Root and all thats why they are called weeds, because all they need is a root to survive. That's why an environmentally friendly poison is the best way to do it.

If they're small, I just pull them out from the roots, but if they're really big, I dig them up with a small handheld shovel to get under the roots.

Get them from the roots or the weeds will just grow back. Also, Roundup is a good weed killer.
