Familiarize yourself with lighted landmarks on the shore and obstacles in the area
Always have navigational charts and lighting on board so you can read the maps
Learn to read channel markers - (green on left to go red on right to return)

That is a seriously stupid thing to do !!

To go out boating WITHOUT a compass is assinine, stupid, rediculous and possibly life threatening !!!
Any GPS system will tell you (in the manual) not to rely on it as your only means of navigation.
If you can't read a compass, don't go boating until you learn how.

The life you safe may be mine (by not running into my boat, at night, while you're lost !!!)

That is what Global Positioning Systems (GPS) is for. Before that, the Navy used LORAN.
