The bombing of Pearl Harbor.

I think you probably heard of Pearl Harbor, and it was obviously the match that set off the dynamite.

But Franklin Roosevelt was determined for the United States to assist Britain and France against Nazi Germany, and would have found some rationale even if Hawaii had not been attacked. The US was supplying the British with large amounts of materiale aid from 1937 onward, through the Lend-Lease Acts.

Ultimately, the fact that a Europe controlled by a maniacal, genocidal despot was against the long-term strategic interests of the US (and the world in general) was the key factor driving US involvement. Similarly, having the entire Pacific Rim run by Japanese militarists is against US interests.

The Japanese needed to take over the Philippines, which were protected by the United States. Believing an attack on them would bring us into the war, they decided to attack Pearl Harbor at the same time, believing this would cripple us for years and it would be too late at that point.

Franklin D. Roosevelt himself by allowing Hawaii (Pearl Harbor) to stay vulnerable for attacks, even though he was warned numerous times by advisors that Pearl Harbor would most likely get attacked. So, of course, the Japanese attacked, and we declared war on them very soon afterwards.
