.... second hand, really cheap, looks great on. Unfortunately, it is impregnated with the odour of stale cigarette smoke. The smell is in the lining and the underside of the leather as well. What is the best way to clean the skirt so that the smell is gone and the leather is reconditioned?

To clean the leather use saddle soap, it is around five or six bucks then apply a leather conditioner, as far as the inside of the skirt turn it wrong side out and put a towel between the liner and the leather skirt and spray the liner with a product called Out, you can find it in the pet section of Walmart it is made for pet odors and urine, but it will also cut the smoke smell and it is a enzyme based odor control product. The saddle soap might be found at Walmart, but for sure you could find it at a store that sells leather coats or at a Tac Shop where they sell saddles and horse supplies, they also will have the leather conditioners too.
Good Luck with this project, but doing it yourself will save you bucks and drycleaning for leather is expensive. Let me know if this works for you.

I would take it outside for let it air out for a couple of days... leave it in the shade... that's what I usually do with bar clothes and it usually works. A dry cleaner might charge something around $40 to clean it, so check their prices if you do decide to dry clean.

walmart has lots of leather cleaners and conditioners in the automotive cleaning part of the store. i'd try one of those as they would probably be the safest thing to use on it outside of a dry-cleaners which is very expensive for leather.

take it to the dry cleaners if you really like it and don't want to take any chances on doing incorrectly.
