1. AVOID cedar and pine shavings or sawdust- they are toxic to small animals.

2. Bedding made of aspen or newspaper is OK, but won't cover the smell much.

3. My favorite bedding material is whatever I can buy cheap at the local feed and grain store- mine is called something like 'cosy kitten' and it is a pelleted material that you can also use for cats, etc. 50 lbs for about $25!

4. To deal with the smell, you may need a bigger cage- overcrowding is a common cause of smells.

5. You may also want to check out the pet shop for odor eliminators- they usually sell stuff that kills the urine scents.

My daughter used cedar shavings we bought at a feed and seed store. They smelled nice and covered up the hamster's odor better than anything else, but you could still tell there was a rodent in the room. I think it's just something you have to live with.

I use this stuff that is made by aspen and you can use it on all kinds of animals. It looks like pellets but its not food. I love it. It is in a blue bag with different animals on it. I can't remember the name of it. But if you find it, it really works.

Sorry I can't remember. Good Luck!!!
