Thkz for all the response. Pls let me eloborate: the tail on one of my goldfish seems to have overgrown, which makes it almost topsy-turvy. Thought trimming the tail might help but wouldn't want to hurt it. Any suggestion?

I was told that it would be the same as if we were to cut our hair or trim our nails, so I don't think it would hurt them.

sounds like swimbladder, it is a disease that will make the fish unable to swim correctly, sometime they will float head down. This can be treated two ways, increase veggie diet of goldfish.... they are omnivores and do best with a 50/50 diet of veggies/liveplant and flake/pellet. I recommend using de-shelled green peas either fresh or frozen. THe other treatment is to purchase PRIMAFIX-made by aquarium pharmacuticals . this is a internal anit bacterial medication to help with bacteria in the intestines of your fish. ... If you trim fish fins, you will hit capularies and also due to the fact the aquarium always has waste present your fish will get a fungal infection on the wound which will have to be treated with a anti fungal med like melefix-aquarium pharmacuticals. However i dont recommend trimming, i dont think that is the problem.

Well it depends how close toward the fish you cut. They definitely feel it as they (fish) use all of their body to detect water movements (from predators). If the tail is causing the fish to die then I guess if it is a last ditch effort to save its life then okay and do it. You can actually buy fish chemicals to temporarily put the goldfish to sleep..perform the operation, and then hold the fish under heavily aerated water to revive him/her. In my opinion too much of a hassle unless this is a $1000 koi or something. After the surgery you better pay close attention to possible fungus attacks or infection attacks. Make sure water is changed regularly and the fish is not stressed.

Yes they feel it, they have nerves just like we do and can feel when a part of their body is cut off. Some people will cut off a part of a fin or tail when the fish has bad finrot and I have seen pics of the fish spazing out and it bleeds after wards.

Also if the fish is having problems swimming its probably not because of the tail. Check out swim bladder disorder.
