As many have said Vampirism does exist, mostly it is thanks to the movies and the romantic, sexually desirable idea of having a sexy "vampire" bite ones neck. There are also those called Psychic Vampires, these people are different in the classic sense of blood drinkers in that they drain people psychically. By this I mean this; what they do is drain your energy, life force so to speak. Many people who know about PV's and have been exposed to one know immediately due to the sudden drain in energy, the fact they are very, very tired all of a sudden and just want to go lay down. This affect normally only lasts for a short time yet it does take a lot out of a person physically because it's so draining depending on the strength of the PV and if the PV actually KNOWS they are doing it or are unaware they do this at all. Those who are unaware of being PV's can be more dangerous than those who are aware and know how to control it. Yes yes sounds like a bunch of Hoohaa but there are many out there that believe strongly in not only PV's but the ability to be a PV themselves. As the young lady from New Orleans said, go to there or any site about New Orleans and you will find a very, very dark side to a lovely old historic city in Louisiana.

Anyway found a few sites that might help you some on all of this. Hopefully I weeded out the sites that were less accurate than the others. You get to decide that though yourself.

many people drain those around them of life force, but there are some who can do it purposefully. They have the ability to reach out and drain a person's energy. They say it's better than caffeine.

I have a good friend who can do that. She's the only energy vampire I know who uses her power for good. She takes people's headaches. She also has an amazing ability to sense energies, making her one of the most powerful witches I know (I know a lot of witches who claim to be powerful, but very few who actually are). I have known her for many years and we are very close friends.

One time it was the dead of winter, she was sitting next to a window, and she felt someone looking at her. She looked and there was someone dressed in black with no color in their body sitting across the road, intently looking at her. She looked down for no more than five seconds, looked up again, and he was sitting on her side of the road, still intently looking at her. He was not dressed for the cold, but was not shivering at all. Just intense calm looking at her. She immediately closed the blinds realizing that she had just had an encounter with a real vampire. A real vampire and a kindred spirit. It probably wasn't a vampire like Dracula or what we see from Hollywood, but it was definitely something from outside of our mundane existence.

One episode of The Most Extreme dealt with animals that drink blood. It featured (not as part of the countdown, just as part of the show) a real human vampire. He lived in New Orleans, but I'm not sure how he is after Hurricanes Rita and Katrina. Also, check out the "Vampyrates" website, if it's still around.

I hope not. But there are lots of myths about creatures of the night sucking blood and they come from all over the world and most of them are ancient in origin, so some kind of *vampirism* probably existed though I'm not sure about magic & flying part
I mean, it's not like Interwiev with the Vampire

The vampires of movies and books are the result of several things being tied together. For instance, if you exume a cadaver shortly after burial, they will look quite pale yet their lips are still rosy colored. This lead to the belief that they came back to drink blood. Another thing is the gasses from internal decomposition some times make a body make noises, groan or even sit up and belch. If you drive a stake into a corpse in this condition, the escaping gas makes for all sorts of stange noises and movements. Then we have vampire bats that literally feed on the blood of animals. Dead people start to lose body mass and tissue and it looks sometimes like their hair and nails have grown after death. Finally, the belief that the dead can rise and do evil as is prevalent in practically all cultures added to the strange tales of corpses that groan and look like they've been out drinking blood. Then we have real life cases of blood thirsty individuals like Blad the Impaler and others throughout history that drank the blood of their victims or bathed in it thinking it would grant them beauty and immortality and you have the stuff of legends.

On another note- many people believe that living for ever in this world would make for a pretty terrific punishment. If you look at monsters such as vampires, Frankenstein and others - including killer robots - they have one thing in common and that is they do not die or at the least are very hard to kill. So even the way we see immortality has added to the myth of the vampire.
In real life we have crazy people that will kill and drink blood for insane reasons having nothing to do with nutrition and we have want- to- be's that dress up as vampires and go to vampire clubs and actually have false teeth made up or have their own teeth made up to look like vampire teeth. They go around making cuts on themselves and others and drink the blood. Again, not for nutritional reasons, just because they are vampire wannabes...And health services warn that this is one sure way of getting several types of diseases.

Not the kind that fly as a bat, can't see reflection, crosses ect. ect.
But as I take it you mean the here and now, it has been done as part of black arts as sacrifice, but not very often and usually not by real witches. Bloodletting has been practiced for years.
People who get really into the Gothe lifestyle do it. So no, to my knowledge "the blood is the life" is untrue. But going into Anne Rice's life of vampires might be a little erotic!

Well actual vampires (people who change into bats and fly) do not exist.

There really are vampire bats and there are also people who practice vampirism. They do drink blood.

PS - Bram Stoker's "Dracula" was actually based on Vlad the Impaler and NOT Countess Elizabeth Bathory as stated by Sandy.

I am origianlly from New Orleans, and we very strongly believe in them. But I think most people identify vampires like in the movies. Not so at all. I just think it is really scary that so many people dont believe. Check out Haunted New Orleans.com, and it will give you some background and dispell alot of the myths.

I doubt they really do exist in the way that you are thinking. I'm sure that there is some sort of vampirism out there somwhere. I have always thought of vampires as dark and oozing with sensuality. The thought of always being young and beautiful...... :)
