I think that cheerleading is not considered a sport because of the old meaning of the word. People don't realize that its not just standing on the sidelines and shouting "RAH,RAH,RAH!"

I am an all-star cheerleader and I will say for sure that cheerleading should be a sport. One of many reasons: Baseball players throw balls into the air. Cheerleaders throw people into the air. If baseball is a sport, cheerleading should be too.

The definition of sport is: Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.

I'll break this definition down for all of you people who don't believe cheerleading is a sport.

Physical activity: Gymnastics,dance,and stunting.

Goverened by a set of rules: Anyone read the rulebook? (Routine must be under 2 mins and 30 secs, No cheerleader is to step off the mat while competing,No jewelry allowed, No nail polish allowed) Need I go on?

Often engaged in competitively: Hmm.. Competitions every weeked from November-May.

Yeah, that covers it for the definition and cheerleaders do more than that. Practices 5 days a week ranging from 2-4 hours. It is also mandatory for most cheerleaders to go to tumbling and conditioning classes. And this SPORT has more injuries than any other.

People don't understand how hard we work and that's why they don't think it is a sport.

Hope this helped. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

You can call it a sport if you want. I don't think of it as a sport, but it doesn't mean you can't. I think of a sport as a competition in which the competitors play an athletic game for points or some other definite method of determining the winner. I think most judged competitions don't meet my definition of a sport. Cheerleading is more athletic than golf, but I would consider golf a sport...not cheerleading. If you're going to define sport as something that requires strength or other physical attribute, then ballet would be a sport. It's extremely demanding, physically.

It's not a sport because the action in cheerleading is not as gratifying like football or basketball, etc. people don't come to watch cheerleaders it not competitive until competition but the sports or competitive you know one team again another. Cheerleader do not go against each other until competition.
That's why its not a sport. Plus most sports are men.

cheerleading is not a sport because it is in support of a sport. Sport being something that you win or lose something.

I think it is one of the hardest things to do, it is very physically demanding and mentally too. It needs to be more respected thats for sure.
Think about ballet. people used to make fun of it. Just try and stand on your toes or spin around without getting sick and all by making it look so easy. Its kinda like cheerleading, but, the cheerleaders can make or break a game!! go CHEERLEADERS

I think most people don't consider cheerleading a sport because it doesn't involve a ball. I am not a cheerleader but I do have relatives and best friends that are cheerleaders and even though I play volleyball and basketball, I will be the first to tell you that cheerleading IS DEFINETLY a sport!!!*

I keep in mind it a game. Just a non-collision one. Cheerleading certainly not used to have such a lot of "tips & stunts." It simply was women in skirts cheering at the nearby physical activities groups. If you believe that Cheerleading is probably the most hazardous game you're very improper. Football, lacrosse, hockey, baseball, softball; even volleyball. Every recreation in softball I get cleated, bruised from sliding. Dislocated my knee two times this season. You underestimate the opposite physical activities too. But, I trust Henry (above) too. I do not know the way NASCAR and poker will also be regarded physical activities. There is not any bodily attempt. I was once looking ESPN at present, additionally FSN (Fox Sports North) and spotted such a lot poker. Ugh, it's NOT a game. It is a...pastime or anything; however no longer a game. I can hit residence runs and spike volleyball. But, I do not ever believe I might be ready to do one of the movements in cheerleading. I believe it will have to be regarded a game. It is at my tuition.

It is more than a sport, it is my life.

If you just do competitive cheerleading it is considered a sport because there is the aspect of competition. but if you just cheer for a school team and only do one or two competitions then just cheering for games does not really make it a sport.

a sport is defined as an athletic activity ( WHICH CHEERLEADING HAS) that competes against other groups (school teams don't always have the competitive part, but all star teams do)

Cheerleading is Entertainment and you act as a leader to get an audience to react and get excited for the teams that are playing. It is not a sport. Most times the Cheerleaders are more enjoyable watching then the teams that are playing.
