I had a hdd that got corrupted & tried to retrieve the data from it. The bios now sees it as N40P. Is there a program I can use to fix this w/out going to a Data Clinic?
I looked at the Maxtor site & found the following:
Symptoms:
1. When the computer is powered on the BIOS will identify the drive as MAXTOR N40P.
Cause: DiamondMax Plus 8 drives that are recognised as "MAXTOR N40P" in the BIOS have often sustained damage to their firmware zone.
Recovery possibilities: Data Clinic are often able to perform a full data recovery on all Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8 series hard drives with firmware zone corruption.

the problem is not a bad pcb board, it is the firmware, here is a site with suggestions that have worked for other people

looks like the only other alternative is to send it get datarecovery and repair, or get the bios and repair kit for 400.00 from china

If it is the firmware, then the cheapest and easiest way to recover would be to buy another drive of the same exact model, then swap the pcb from the new drive to your drive. Get your data off. Then you can put the board back in the new drive.
The cost of a new drive will be much less than going to a data recovery company, and you can use the new drive. Or you could try to buy an old drive from ebay. Ones with corrupted disks but good pcb's might be available really cheap.

You can download the diagnostic tools from the Maxtor web site for checking your hdd, but normally if ur pc recognize still is a good sign, so u can check its have bad sector inside HDD. U can use Windows Command chkdsk for checking it, if u r using the Maxtor HDD Checker then u have to follow the step that the web site provide...
If still cannot u just set the HDD jumper to slave, and then boot by the other HDD (If u have 2 HDD in 1 PC) and the using windows check disk command...
