There's no formula to success in becoming a bestselling author; however they both, of course, have extraordinary writing abilites. They also had unique and creative ideas for books that had never really been explored to such an extent before. They both probably had a little bit of luck involved too.

I guess having an unpredictable end, an exeptional talented main chraracter with some human qualities and a bit of a luck would creat u a bestseller!

There is no specific formula to success .
I believe that there are three D's , which take you to your Final D
That is DEVOTION , DEDICATION,& DETERMINATION will take you to your final D DESTINY.
As far as writing is concerned , Intuition plays a very important part ,Your relation with God should be strong , that make intuition strong .From intuition comes new ideas , then writing power also counts .Thats how writers like Joanne Kathleen Rowling created enchanting best sellers.

Dan Brown's style seems more formulaic. some writers, especially things like romance novels, use formulas

Some authors once they find a particular character works for them, stick to them. Colin Forbes also does it. Louis L' amour does it. A lot of them do. Essentially these are strong characters and are almost always represented as an ordinary individuals who are able to do extra -ordinary things.
