1984, by George Orwell. Here's a line: "....a boot, stamping on a human face, forever..." it gets worse, much worse.

Years ago I read "Amityville Horror".

The family went to bed and I was in the living room reading. Well, I got sleepy but before I could go to bed --I had to turn out the living room light.....which meant the whole house would be dark.
I flipped the light switch off and ran into and through the dark bedroom and jumped---literally jumped into the bed.
That was one scary book.

"Cujo" by Stephen King is really well written. I felt like I was being attacked by the dog! Also, "The Green Mile" is a very good set of books. When the French guy is executed, it gets very gruesome and descriptive.

This may or may not scare you, but I was thoroughly chilled after reading Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood." Read the book first, then watch the film.

'It' by Stephen King, but I was about 13 years old. If you don't like clowns or monsters, it's a good scarey book.

'It' and 'Pet Semetary' by Stephen King.

But maybe that was because I'd seen the movies when I was little and they both scared me shitless. So maybe the fear was a holdover or something.
