Depends on what kind and how old. Most of them only go in one way. There will be a prong missing on one corner. And you will see how it goes when the old one comes out. Make sure your motherboard will handle it also.

Well obviously the processor goes on the motherboard. Processors fit only one way. If you encounter ANY resistance, STOP or you will break your processor. It should fit right in with no effort. After the processor is in, you will need to apply a thin layer of thermal grease. Then place your heatsink and fan on top of the processor (and grease) and follow instructions on mounting the fan.
