before that we have to answer where our heart is... if you say it is in the chest then i would say mind is in the brain.. in india they say that the fastest thing on earth is the mind... it belongs to us and it stays within us but it it keeps roaming aroung collecting external facts and simulations and producing judgements and conclusions.. if it works alone what we call reason and sometimes it works with heart and gives what we call feeling and sometimes it doesnt do anything and then our heart says something what we call intution...
"Life is a comedy for those who think and life is a tragedy for those who feel.."

I'm of the belief (and yes, I know that this belief makes me a little weird) that the mind (thought, memory, the like) actually resides deep within our dna and that at some point in the future we will find that memories and thoughts will be clonable (hehe, my word).
I think that the brain is basically the organ that organizes the information residing in your dna but that the true information isn't all just sitting in your brain.
Well, that's my theory. Hope it helps.
Love as always,
Sebastian

I think it was the philosopher Gilbert Ryle who said, "What is mind ? - never matter. What is matter ? never mind."
To be a bit more serious, he'd then go onto say the question you're asking contains a 'category mistake' - minds simply aren't the kind of thing that reside somewhere. To put it another way, to ask "Where does the mind reside?" is like asking "What colour is an idea?" - they're simply not that kind of thing.

If you think of the mind as similar to a computer program running on a PC. Then I would say the program resides on the Hard Disk or memory - until it's deleted.
So I suppose I would say the mind resides in the brain (until it's deleted) ;)

Doctors would tell us it is in your brain and then procede to tell us which part of the brain is responsible for which part of the mind. Here's a thought, it exists on a nominal plane, perhaps with all other minds, partitioned like your hard drive, and transmitted to your body by means similar to the internet. Wouldn't that be interesting? Your body dies but your mind doesn't. It merely finds another computer to download into or not. It could just be merged into the much larger parts of the server. Who knows? But, it is fun to play with the idea.

biologically, the mind originates with the brain (although there are substantial arguments for cellular or genetic knowledge). Metaphysically, the mind exists as an extension of our corporeal existence, and philosophers have tried to define its seat for millennia, people much smarter and more smelly than you or I.
I tend to to think of the mind to something akin to a world traveler. It has a permanent residence, and it always comes back there to do the laundry, pay the bills, eat, sleep, etc, but it otherwise has an unlimited passport.

It is within every cell of your body, and each cell in turn, has it's own feelings and emotions, and ways of communicating with the whole. If you have ever suffered from depression, you may have felt like a heavy weight was burdening you, metaphorically speaking. This somatisation of emotions and feelings, produces somatic symptoms, when verbalised by the individual, they go on to describe their symptoms in metaphors.
It's worth noting that very few people suffering from depression, ever complain about a heavy burden in their fingers, or hands, they are not aware of anything unusual in these areas.
Which gives rise to the theory that individual cells have their own feelings and emotions, and may feel something entirely different, to what another part of the body is experiencing.

CAUTION! SERIOUS ANSWER!!:
I think mind is like a million little mirrors pointing is all sorts of different directions. The image altogether is unrecognizable, but if you could examine each of them you would see it's completely made up of reflections, that's all.
Mind resides within the crystal bowl of your head, but since it's a copy of everything that surrounds it, in a way it resides everywhere.

In the head, behind the eyes. Isn't it what it feels like? Even scientists say the consciousness is the result of brain activity (although things may very well come in reversed order).
There is also another center of something in the chest, next to the heart.

Well mental state. It resides everywhere all at once never in the same spot but never leaving the spot it is in. To constantly have a thought racing through your mind either makes you very smart or very crazy. I haven't decided which I am yet.

I lost my mind after I had my kids and perhaps I have been slowly losing it from the day I emancipated my self from my parents -thinking I was a big shot ready to live on my own and be my own person. In a way I don't really want it back because I like living in my own world. Now 'the mind' I don't know where it is and don't expect me to know since I don't even know where mine is. Thanks!
