They absolutely do. They pay their employees to work and provide email as a means to do their job. If an employee is using e mail for other then work related messages it is can be cause for termination. Most companies make you sign a waiver saying you will only use it for business related purposes.Even if your not on company time it still belongs to them, the same rule applies.

Absolutely. As long as the company owns the equipment and the internet service (and the e-mail address for that matter) through which e-mail is being sent and received, then yes, they have a right to know for what purposes their property is being used. Additionally, it could be a matter of public image and branding—anything being sent from that e-mail address could be seen as a representation of that company.

Yeah, if your talking about business email. They have to make sure that its being used for business purposes, but mainly to make sure that it's not being used to do something that can get the company in trouble.

If they own the computers then yes, (this is what the courts have said)I have my own personal computer (laptop) at work just for that reason.

i wouldnt say so: your email is your private life, and they shouldnt be peeking at things that you dont want seen. Its your private life, and you decide whether or not you want to keep it private

well, it does suck, but it is their equipment, they pay for the internet, and they are paying you to be there so I guess they have the right, but it still sucks
