At work we were listening to gospel & my bosses asked me to bring my cd's. I listen to take 6,Yolanda Adams,Canton Jones, different choirs,Kirk Franklin, etc. My coworker keeps saying that my music is too "black" & that we needed "white" gospel in there. She said my gospel was too soulful & she keeps making these comments to me.

First of all, they were being unprofessional as well as racist. Gospel music is soulful anyway so it should not matter if the artists are black, white or other. Your bosses need to check themselves because Gospel music is about worshipping and appreciating God not worrying about what someone looks like.

Eveyone has an opinion on what culture listens to what music, it is very apparent in people over 40. My guess is that she fits into that category. It may not be racist as much as agist.

I do have a funny story.. I once fried chicken for a function, and this guy asked me if it was black chicken? I responded that I did not know, I did not see it's feathers. Everyone just looked at me, and when he explained that he meant, did the recipe come from a black person, I just laughed..

It may be considered racist, but I wouldnt say its intentional. You have to admit that there is a HUGE difference in southern baptist gospel and northern gospel. I think you should let it slide, she is probably still commenting on it because she can see it gets your panties in a bunch...

i would have to say that it crossed from criticism to racism as soon as "black" and "white" were brought into it. Most people who use their ignorance in such a way tend to keep at it, thinking that they wont get caught or reported. As someone who put up with it, but wont any more, report it! If you get no resolution from management take it to your union/labour relations board. Don't let someone else's ignorance interfere with your work or your life!! Good Luck!!

I think it was unintentially racist. Some people think that you can act black, there is no such thing! If they say it again politely ask..." Can I get a definition of being too black?"
