Yes it does advise you on what specific ram THEY can sell you, but it will also give you the generic specs so you can go buy anyones ram thats the same.

Compaq's web site usually has the specs for their systems.
www.compaq.com (now actually through HP's support)

You could also take your computer to a repair shop and they could tell you. There would most likely be a charge for that though.

1. Check your manual.
2. Go to Compaq's web site.
3. Before you buy, see how much Windows reports, power down and open your memory cover and see how many slots and how many are available. This will also determine if you have to replace your old memory for 2 newer ones (Max size) or just to add one.
