Ratings really began in the 60's. Even though there wasn't a PG-13 rating until the late 70's. These were developed to protect kids from seeing movies that were either too advanced or too disturbing for them.

I don't know when they began, but obviously when they needed them to rate a movie. Ever been to a movie that looked really good (ahem- Mean Girls with Lindsay Lohan) but it turned out to have profane language or "special" scenes. Been there, done that. Thank you review and movie ratings!
