Go to Device Manager [ Right- click on My Computer and select properties. Click the Hardware Tab and then select Device Manager]. Double click "Sound, video and game controllers". If there is an X or an exclamation mark, double click the device and select "Troubleshoot". Go through the steps to target the problem and review them to check what you should do to fix it. If that doesn't work, then go to the sound card's manufacterer's website and check if there is any driver updates for your device.

By installed do you mean just physically, or did you install the driver? It should come with a disk to install the driver. If the driver was installed, did you reboot? Check your device manager. Right click on my computer and click on the hardware tab, and the device manager button is there. scroll down and if it is installed you should see it under sound "cards video and game controllers" if it's not there try reinstalling it. If it is there are there any exclamation points or X's or any other signs by it? Right click and delete it, and then restart your computer that sometimes helps. Your computer should pick it back up when it restarts. Hope this helps you some.

do you mean "restarted"? You can go to the "add/remove hardware" item in the control panel. Have it search for new hardware. If none is found, you can install the driver manually if you know what hardware you have. If it is "add-on" hardware, you probably got a driver disk with it. You can reinstall that. Or check the website of the manufacturer for downloadable drivers.

Sometimes upgrading you OS (XP upgrade) can cause drivers to malfunction.

Go to Device manager
look for your sound card listing
