There were slaves who didnt want to leave their "owners". Not all of them were treated badly as everyone seems to think. I have studied the Civil War and it sounds like some of you should too.

People to day don't know the history like they should. Our schools, I mean our babysitters (get it) do not teach history the way it was when we were being raised. Never was I taught that the Rebel Flag stands for racism. It was simply the flag of the South. The War if you go back and study was fought mainly because the Northern states wanted control of the country and the Southern states wanted to control the country. If the South had won the U.S. flag would have been the Rebel flag. The flag we fly today was the Northern flag. Oh by the way there were as many blacks fighting for the South and there were for the North. Go Study for yourself

For me, the concept of secession is good. A people should have the right to decide their government, and if an institutionalized democracy or republic fails them, than revolution or secession is the only viable alternative. So, from one point of view, I applaud the efforts of the Confederacy to secure self-governance from what seemed at the time an oppressive north-dominated Union. Therefore, from a certain standpoint, the Rebel Flag represents the indominable drive for freedom.

Unfortunately, the Confederacy would not be an exemplar of democracy. The institution of slavery runs directly against the principles of freedom I previously cited, and no matter how much sugar-coating one does, praising the Confederates still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. It's virtually undeniable that slavery would continue to have been practiced in the South if independence was achieved. In this way, the Rebel Flag as a symbol of state-sponsored and -supported slavery is indeed a symbol of oppression. For this reason, I would support the Union's actions as the lesser of two evils.

A lot of people think that the rebel flag stands for racism because they lived through the 1960s, and saw racist white Southerners waiving the rebel flag as they burned black churches, shot blacks who were marching on Selma and beat up people who were trying to make sure that blacks could vote.

As much as Southerners want the rest of the country to believe that the Civil War was about States Rights, the fact is that it was about Slavery.

And yes -- I have probably read more history than you have. And yes -- I have lived in the South.

Well, I live in Columbia sc where the confederate flag is still flown outside the state house. Many of my black friends take offense to this as it is a symbol of the Southern States Proclivity to enslave their forefathers.
The war/symbol of the Confederate flag was mostly about money/conquest of the West though, and the power of States vs. the power of the Federal government. This debate still rages on. Mostly in Supreme Court decisions.

I'm sure as hell blacks wouldn't have "defended the Confederacy" if it meant that slaves would remain in the Confederacy, unless the blacks were freed and loved whites. Use your common sense, girl, and don't believe everything you read.

If I was in a war that decided my fate, I would not be on the bad guys' side.

The rebel flag has such racist connotations because it is the symbol adopted by the South when they refused to abolish slavery and chose to leave the United States instead. It is difficult to say that the rebel flag is not racist, considering it is a symbol of the South's desire to continue slavery. "Heritage, not hate" is an ignorant saying, unless you are claiming to be proud of having subjugated other human beings.

But it was the flag that stood for the southern states who were slave owners. That's what Black people think of when they see it.
