We are approaching 10 trillion in national debt ($10,000,000,000,000) and wasting $1b/week in Iraq. Bush doesn't abide by laws he doesn't agree with. He chooses to cross off sections of laws that he signs. There are multiple violations of the constitution, including warrantless searches and approving of torture. We are isolated in the world, and the odds of more terrorist attacks are only increasing. I could keep going. The question is: can this be fixed, or is it part of a permanent US decline?

To rosi I: I'm an educated 43 year old male who is very concerned about the direction the US is taken under the Bush regime. Please goto Boston Globe article:

http://tinyurl.com/ogv5u

for a good summary of how Bush is seizing executive power and bypassing congressional atuthority to make laws and for the executive to faithfully execute them. There are links from there if you want to do more research and educate yourself. This is a real violation of the Constitution. I'm not making this up.

I don't think that it is irreversible. However, there are going to be many challenges in the upcoming years for the President and Congress. It is not going to matter which party is in power, but some tough decisions are going to have to be made. When tough decisions are made, someone is usually going to be be upset.

Our biggest long term challenge is fiscal responsibility. Our economy is resilient and grows over time. However, the debt load that we are incurring will eventually slow the economy. To address this we are going to have to have a combination of increased revenues and lower or controlled costs. This would most likely be letting the tax cuts expire (and no more tax cuts) and entitlement reform.

The second issue in regards to the constitutional violations is a result of the same party controlling each branch of government. The natural checks and balances that should occur are not possible due to political reasons. I would hope that having one party control the presidency and the other the house and/or the Senate would cure this. This is how it was in the 1990s when the economy was flourishing.

If both of these issues are not addressed in the next 5 to 10 years, there are going to be some extreme measures that will have to be taken further down the road. Let's hope it does not come to that.

What damage? I guess if enough people say it, they believe it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Tax receipts are way up (double digit increases) and yes, this is after the "devastating" tax cuts. (grandma is not really eating dog food after all). Unemployment is near all-time lows. More people own homes than ever, etc.......

The world is a very imperfect place, and always will be.

Get used to it, get real, and be informed.

The U.S. decline will be decided by its people (generally, not an impressive group right now). I would take the WWII ("greatest") generation any day over the often misguided Baby Boomer parents and their spoiled kids. (obviously some and not all).

If we isolate ourselves from an overwhelming number of those lovely members of the U.N, is that such a bad thing? Being a sheep is not the way to go.

Excuse me, you are terribly misinformed, President Bush doesn't cross off what he doesn't agree with, that's called a "line item veto" and he doesn't have that power. I doubt you can back up any of these charges with fact, but I have a feeling truth isn't important to you is it? The US isn't in decline either, where do you get this stuff? Are you 10?

the only possibility of a reverse would be at least three consecutive terms-of-office by Democratic Presidents (plural-the next serving 2 consecutive terms followed by at least one-all Democratic). The damage by the Bush boors is global and reprehensible.
