If she's eleven she should be old enough to understand. Just tell her. If you teach her not to hate homosexuals, she won't hate them. Just say, "Your brother is a homosexual. He is attracted to members of the same sex. There is nothing wrong with that and anyone who tries to tell you otherwise isn't worth listening to."

I feel for your situation being married with three teenagers. I too had my first girl friend tell all my friends I was gay when I was just shy. Not very nice!
The only suggestion I can make is to as a family sit down and honestly explain to your daughter that her brother is attracted to people of the same sex and most importantly he is still her brother and it does not affect their relationship.

This is one where there is no easy answer. Unfortunately, telling her NOTHING is the worse thing you can do. Children would RATHER hear the truth about things, everything. My parents had more secrets than spys. When I grew up and got older as an adult, I continually learned the truth about a LOT of things that I was told differently when I was a child living at home. This is NOT the way to raise children! - nothing but lies. Tell the truth. She can handle it.

I think you should just be honest with her.
"Your brother is gay. Some people are attracted to people of the opposite sex; your brother is attracted to other men.
It's fine with me; I love him just the way he is. It's not his fault. He didn't choose to be gay. And there's nothing "wrong" with it.
Some people are hateful or ignorant. Talk to me when people talk to you, and I'll help you figure out an appropriate response.
And you may have some mixed feelings about what I'm telling you. That's OK. We can always talk about it."

Tell her that he is gay, and if she doesn't know what that means, explain it to her. Make sure to tell her that it isn't wrong, but that some people think it is, and because of this, people might say hurtful things to him or her. Tell her not to be ashamed of him; he is still her brother, and being gay is just a part of who he is. Tell her that you cannot change it, and it is what will ultimately make him happy.

sit her down, don't make her feel uncomfortable you know? don't say, "we need to talk" just start off with "how was your day?" then talk about make up or boys. then say, "y'know how those kids have been asking you if ( son's name) is gay?" (let her answer.) and then say "well, it's sort of true." then go from there!
i hope this helps! best of luck!,

That's a tough situation to be in. Maybe if you call her counselor at school they can help you out.
