Strawberry Fields was a place near where John Lennon grew up, and he used to go there as a child. It is a metaphor for taking you to your "happy place" where you are carefree as a child.

And yes, they were probably high when they wrote the lyrics.

Strawberry Field (yep-that's it's original spelling) is a park across from a children's home in Liverpool, England-the Fab four's home turf. John wrote the song as both a tribute to the place and as a psychedelic piece.

It was a drug induced dream that happens at a party - hence the different music (the party music) at the very end of the song.
